What is psychotherapy?
According to the Ordre des Psychologues du Québec (OPQ), psychotherapy is defined as the following:
The psychological treatment for a mental disorder, for behavioral disturbances or for any other problem causing psychological suffering or distress which aims to promote in the client significant changes in their cognitive, emotional or behavioral functioning, in their interpersonal system, in their personality or in their state of health. This treatment goes beyond helping to cope with common difficulties or providing counselling or support.

What are the different approaches?
At Bloom Therapy, our clinical practice is informed by both psychodynamic and existential-humanistic orientations.
Existential-humanistic psychotherapy maintains the fundamental belief that all human beings possess within themselves the tools and resources necessary for self-actualization. Existential-humanistic psychotherapists focus on developing self-awareness, harnessing personal strengths, and guiding clients to find the solutions to the problems they are facing. They work collaboratively with their clients to promote self-actualization and positive life changes.
Psychodynamic psychotherapy focuses on understanding the origin and/or development of one’s difficulties primarily through the process of self-reflection. Psychodynamic psychotherapists attend to their clients’ internal world and aim to help them understand their thought processes, feelings, needs, desires, motivations, and patterns with the goal of fostering insight and resolving inner conflict.
